Enchanting

I just had the privilege to see South Pacific (July 20th-Aug 1st at the Buell) tonight. It was an enchanting piece of work.

South Pacific is considered by many to be one of the greats in musical history. I would wholeheartedly concur. The show is very well put together, thoughtful and elegant, as well as lighthearted and enchanting. It opens with two adorable children singing and the Frenchman. How can that not set you in a good mood? Then Nellie's first song sets the tone for her to be a happy and charming lady, and her voice is fantastic. The style she puts into the song just takes it to the top, she embodies the time that the show premiered. The show also brings with it great comedy, Bloody Mary, Billis, and the boys. It brings to light what the state of the nation was in when the show came out back in the day.

Along with the lightheartedness that South Pacific carries, it brings two big themes, a spirit of love and the hope that a dream can bring. Bali Ha'i is always there, but seems unattainable. Yet the power is in the hope, the dream, of Bali Ha'i, at least for the boys. For Nellie it is in Emile that the embodiment of love is shown, after all South Pacific is a love story, and she brings that to light in great song and dance. These were the two themes that really carried and will stick with me from the show.

Overall, you will have a great time, your evening will be enchanting and you will end up leaving with a soul warmed by a fantastic show. Go see South Pacific, I highly doubt anyone would leave disappointed.
